The United States announced on Monday that it would send $550 million worth of new weapons to Ukrainian forces fighting a Russian invasion, including ammunition for rocket launchers that are becoming increasingly important in the fight, AFP reported.
The aid “will include more ammunition for (…) Himars systems,” White House spokesman John Kirby told the press.
According to him, the total cost of military aid to Ukraine since President Joe Biden took office is more than $8 billion.
In addition, four more American HIMARS missile systems have arrived in Ukraine, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said.
On July 22, the US already announced that it had approved $270 million in new military aid to Ukraine, including four new HIMARS missile systems.
Thanks to the new aid, the total number of M142 highly mobile multiple-launch artillery systems sent to Ukraine will reach 20 units.
Ukraine also received the first tranche of financial aid from the EU in the amount of 500 million euros.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine received the first tranche of aid worth one billion euros to overcome the financial disaster caused by the war.
The second tranche will be transferred on Tuesday, August 2, said the Prime Minister, quoted by the Kyiv Independent.
