Kosovo: temporary detente with US intervention

The possibility of general fire has been removed from the horizon Kosovoas the government of Albanian speakers suspended a controversial decision to make mandatory changes to Serbian identity cards and license plates, a move that sparked a minority uprising and fueled rumors of an imminent Serbian military intervention.

Early Monday morning his government Al bin Kurti announced that it was postponing from 1 August to 1 September the implementation of its decision to replace Serbian license plates used by minorities, mainly in northern Kosovo, with Kosovo ones. The implementation of the decision not to accept Serbian identity cards when crossing the border and to issue their holders with temporary documents for entry into Kosovo with a three-month stay has also been postponed to September 1.

In response to the Kurti government’s decision, the Serbs set up roadblocks with trucks filled with gravel in northern Kosovo, where police gathering places were fired upon, but there were no casualties. NATO Forces in the Region (KFOR) were put on alert, and unconfirmed rumors from Belgrade said that the Serbian army had entered Kosovo and engaged in a firefight with the Kosovo police.

The temporary collapse of Pristina became possible after the intervention of the United States, which acted in concert with the EU. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed Moscow’s satisfaction with the deescalation of tensions, but stressed that the suspension would only last for one month. From the very beginning of the new crisis in Kosovo, Russia sided with Serbia, whose President Aleksandar Vucic said he was satisfied that “reason prevailed.”

By Monday afternoon, most of the Serbian barricades had been removed under the supervision of KFOR forces supported by helicopters. The dismantling of the remaining checkpoints in the direction of the border with Serbia was to be completed last night. All of northern Kosovo was calm yesterday, and the police presence was discreet.
