A person from the United States has tested positive for bird flu after being infected by a dairy cow, authorities said Monday, AFP reported, citing News.ro.
This is the second case of avian flu testing positive in the country, after the virus struck flocks in Texas, Kansas and several other states in the past week.
“The patient reported red eyes (conjunctivitis) as his only symptom and he is recovering,” authorities said Monday, adding that he had been isolated and treated with an antiviral drug used to treat the flu.
Authorities said the infection has not changed their assessment of the risk to the American public, which is considered “low.” Cases of bird flu in humans are very rare.
The first case was found in the country in 2022 in Colorado, but it was an infection from poultry. Experts, however, are concerned about the increasing number of mammals infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza and the possibility of its spread between mammals, although human cases are very rare.
Texas authorities added that the infection of cattle does not pose any danger from the point of view of selling milk, since dairies are required to destroy the milk of sick cows.
Pasteurization also destroys viruses. Authorities also said they were working to help affected dairies limit exposure to their workers, and monitor and test people working with infected cattle.
