French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen presented on Sunday an updated balance sheet of checks carried out on all security agents and civil servants involved in the organization of this summer’s Olympic Games, AFP reported.
Darmanin said 800 people have so far been rejected from this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris as a result of 180,000 security checks out of a total of one million checks to be carried out.
“The French people should know that we check absolutely everyone who approaches the Olympic Games. That is why there are volunteers, torchbearers, people who will accompany you. We need to conduct a million checks, we have already conducted 180 thousand checks, we have excluded 800 people,” – the Minister of Internal Affairs emphasized on the broadcast of the LCI news channel.
“This means that there are people who wanted to sign up to carry the flame, to volunteer at the Olympic Games, and who clearly did not have good intentions,” Gerald Darmanen continued, adding that among those who were refused were “radical Islamists ” and “radical environmentalists who want to protest”.
The Olympic Games (July 26 – August 11) and the Paralympics (August 28 – September 8) will mobilize almost 45,000 internal security forces. An average of 35,000 police and gendarmes will be on duty every day across France to ensure event security (25,000 for the Paralympic Games). In addition, there will be at least 18,000 military personnel and 18,000 to 22,000 private security agents on a daily basis.
Paris is hosting the Olympics at a time when France is on high alert in the face of the threat of terrorist attacks, and is proposing an unprecedented opening ceremony on the Seine on July 26, with 45,000 police and gendarmes mobilized. (news.ro)
