France has asked 45 foreign governments to provide several thousand military, police and civilian personnel to provide security for this summer’s Paris Olympics, government sources told Reuters on Friday. 35 of these 45 countries have already responded positively to the request received.
The French plan calls for the deployment of 45,000 police, 20,000 private security agents and around 15,000 soldiers each day to protect the millions of spectators and tourists who will be in France for the sporting event.
The competition is a complex geopolitical and security issue because it is happening simultaneously with the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. In recent days, the French government has raised the threat level of terrorism to the highest level.
“The security context, especially in recent weeks, means that we have to pay special attention to the security of these Olympic Games,” a military official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Foreign police presence at major sporting events is not uncommon, but it is rare for a country to request support due to the presence of foreign soldiers.
At the last World Cup in Qatar, France supported the organizers with explosive detection dogs, equipment and personnel to combat drones.
According to a source in the Ministry of the Interior, the French government sent a request in January to 45 countries. Paris wants to bolster its force with 2,000 officers, both military and non-military.
The military and police support France needs includes motorized and mounted brigades, counterfeit document experts, demining and anti-drone specialists, and explosives detection dog teams.
On Thursday, Poland announced it was joining the international effort by sending troops, including dogs. Germany, for its part, said in March that it could make a contribution.
Other European allies, including Britain and Italy, will take part, providing dozens of police officers to patrol the streets.
According to a French government source who spoke to Reuters, 35 of the 45 countries have so far responded positively to France’s request.
“This is a classic approach of the host countries of major international competitions, as was the case during the Rugby World Cup,” a government source said.
France benefited from the support of 160 members of the European security services during the tournament, which it hosted in September 2023.
In addition to the countries that have received requests for support, Israel and the United States will send their own security equipment for athletes and their citizens.
The war in Gaza and protests against the actions of the Israeli army are raising concerns about the security of the Israeli delegation, and increased measures will be needed to protect the athletes in Israel, the source said, without giving details about the sensitivity of the situation.
Several delegations from Israel have already arrived in France to work on preventing possible problems.
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
