If you were born in Romania or choose to live here, you should have no worse health care than the Germans, Italians or French. You should have access to treatment that can save or improve your life, at home or abroad, within a reasonable time. This is the mission that the United Right takes on in the European Parliament.

Romania has extraordinary doctors, but is still far behind Western Europe in terms of state-of-the-art equipment and procedures. European money will also help us close this gap, but it requires the right people in the right place.

The current PSD-PNL government cut 740 million euros, the European funding from the PNRR for hospitals, without any clear and appropriate explanation. Successive PSD governments for the past 20 years have consistently told us about 8 regional hospitals. I’m still left with stories. Therefore, we cannot afford to miss the last train of European funding and programs at the European level to ensure proper treatment of Romanian patients.

What will representatives of the United Right do in the European Parliament:

• MEPs from the “United Right” will support European policies that simplify and guarantee access to treatment for patients, regardless of where they were born or live.

• MEPs from the United Right will work on new European legislation on access to pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, which will ensure better and faster access for all EU patients to safe, effective and affordable medicines.

• Members of the European Parliament Dreapta Unită will support the development of international cooperation networks and the exchange of best practices, which will facilitate the access of Romanian patients to hospitals in other European countries, if the necessary treatment is not available in Romania.

“For many people in Romania, the best treatment is a plane to Turkey or the West. In Romania – at least in the big cities where we have qualified personnel – we should have access to the latest treatment methods, and when this is not possible, when saving a life depends on a specialized center from another country, it should be possible. My priority will always be children, those who need help, those for whom Europe can determine the difference between life and death,” says Vlad Voiculescu, candidate of the United Right in the European Parliament elections.

Two European initiatives that can save lives

Every sixth death in Romania has cancer-related causes. The harsh reality of statistics shows that patients who would have a chance to live lose the fight against the disease, because in Romania they either do not receive treatment on time or receive the wrong treatment. But there is a solution for this too. We already have two initiatives in this area that show us that black statistics can be corrected: we are talking about the Cancer Strategy and the projects launched through the Horizon program on how human health is affected by the environment. . Let’s take them one at a time.

The European Cancer Strategy calls for member states to be helped to set up more screening programs so that the disease can be detected at an early stage and easily treated. Additionally, the prevention section of this strategy also includes vaccination against HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer. This plan also provides for the creation of a single platform in the EU to ensure that patients in different member states have equal access to the latest generation of medicines that treat effectively. And, last but not least, the European strategy that we have to put into practice is that medical staff who treat cancer patients have access to training programs that keep them up to date with the latest methods and technologies in this field.

The Horizon program is designed to more easily link research and innovation to practical applications in medicine. In addition, the program establishes precise measures to reduce pollution, which is the cause of many pathologies.

Two programs show us that this is possible, and we must ensure that it is done so that well-designed programs on paper become a concrete reality that saves lives.

Black statistics

At the moment, Romania is not a model of good practice in the field of health care. Eurostat ranks us first in the number of deaths from avoidable causes, which means that a large proportion of those who die from the disease in Romania could be saved with treatment in other European countries. We are not better off even with diseases that can be prevented with proper care. More precisely, four Romanians out of 1,000 die from preventable causes, and almost three out of 1,000 from curable causes. The average figure for Europe is half as low. There are data that compel us to act, and that is why health is an important item in the United Right’s program for the European Parliament.
