This is the most serious incident for us since the beginning of the war started by Russia against Ukraine, the event with the largest spread on the territory of Romania, according to law enforcement sources.
“Until the MApN analysis is done, we will not speculate on the origin of the drone,” the same sources said.
According to information provided by confidential sources, a report that a drone of military origin had fallen between the municipality of Braila and the commune of Freche was received on Thursday evening among the law enforcement agencies of the district of Braila.
Called, the prefect of the district Julian Timofey did not comment on the event, claiming that all possible military information is the prerogative of the Ministry of Defense.
The place where the drone fell is on the Great Island of Breila, 8 kilometers from the city of Breila and 23 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
The official independent confirmation was published by the local publication “Ziarul Comunitatea”, which quoted Colonel Štefan Stojan, the spokesman of ISU Brăila. He says he expected the villagers to call 112 in the event of such an event, but they did not do it “as it should”.
“I heard a blow, but I don’t know where it fell,” said an eyewitness, an employee of the ferry crossing to the Big Island. The statement was forwarded to another local publication, debraila.ro.
How many Russian drones have fallen in Romania since the invasion of Ukraine
In September 2023, at least 3 Russian drones fell in Romania in 10 days, the last one was discovered on September 13 between Nuferu and Victoria villages in Nuferu commune, Tulcea county.
The first two cases of finding the remains of drones on the territory of Romania were near the city of Plauru, located almost on the border, but Nuferu and Victoria are much further from the border.
In none of the three previous cases did Romania’s radars detect anything.
Why didn’t the army’s radars detect anything then?
“I would not like us to interpret this as Romania’s vulnerability. No radar in the world has unlimited capabilities. These are the laws of physics. Therefore, the set of measures to reduce risks should also include civil protection measures,” MApN spokesman Kostyantyn Spinu said on Digi 24 on September 13.
He also explained how radars work, talking about the “technical limitations” when such drones attack from low altitudes:
“When these types of attack drones, which are used by the Russian Federation, attack from low and very low altitudes, up to 100 meters, this is the principle of radar location, physics – radar equipment at these low and very low altitudes is very difficult to image because at such a height there are elements of the terrain, there is vegetation, even birds, and drones are very similar in size to birds.
Therefore, there are many technical limitations to any type of radar in the world, no matter how powerful it is. We have state-of-the-art radar devices.”
“We make every effort to ensure a certain level of security. With the war on the border, no one can give certainty, but we are doing our best,” he added.
