Some operators are selling yellow chickens that have been fed with food additives to deceive people that they are country birds, says ANPC president Horia Constantinescu. If he initially talked about an “attack on the safety” of consumers, he came back and said that it was actually a deceptive business practice. In response, the ANSVSA indicated that there is no risk to the health of consumers and the use of some dyes is allowed if they are approved.
“There is a saying that you walk with a painted crow. But here the modern version refers to painted chicken.
There are business entities that paint their products to mislead us. But even here a miracle happens: some chickens are dyed by feeding, so that the dye penetrates the fabric and does not wash off.
Interestingly, and please read the prospectus, the eggs also take on a different color when using food mixed with products specific to our trick,” Horia Constantinescu, president of the ANPC, wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
According to him, there is now a great commotion among those who should pay attention to this phenomenon.
Representatives of the National Service of Veterinary Medicine and Food Safety are responsible for this.
What does ANSVSA say?
Denuc Pale, vice-president of the institution, told HotNews.ro that the use of dyes in animal feed is legal as long as these dyes are controlled and permitted.
“Chickens naturally feed on corn and alfalfa. Because their lifestyles have changed, the use of dyes in their food has been approved,” Paley says.
The president of ANPC published a prospectus for the dye called Avizant Yellow 20HS, which states that the product complies with EU Regulation no. 1831/2003:
“Feed additive for use as a mixture in ready-made compound feed for additional pigmentation of the skin of birds and coloring of egg yolk. Avisant yellow 20HS contains natural xanthophylls obtained from the extract of calendula flowers (Tagetes erecta). With the help of a patented saponification process, optimal bioavailability of oxycarotenoids is achieved.”
“If we add salmonella, which was discovered on some farms by our colleagues, under the condition that each of these structures should have serious and not surface filters, then painted chicken also becomes dangerous for our health.
We faced a serious attack on the safety of each of us: chickens turned yellow to look better, infected with dangerous strains of salmonella. This is what I call a “delicious” dish,” Constantinescu also wrote.
“It was a pretty bad outing. We do not participate in the advertising competition between institutions. We will apply the law,” the ANSVSA representative added.
Regarding the presence of salmonella bacteria, Dale said there are more than 2,500 types of salmonella, but only two are dangerous and can be neutralized by cooking foods.
“We have not received any official document to show whether the chickens mentioned by the ANPC president contain substances that are not approved or unsafe for consumption. Normally, ANPC should have waited for the analysis bulletin from the laboratory and then issued a notification in a specially designed system,” ANSVSA vice-president also said.
According to him, the use of these additives does not pose a threat to the health of consumers, and if it is found that the manufacturer or sales agent has put dangerous products on the market for consumption, a criminal case may be initiated.
Sorin Minea, president of Romalimenta, for his part, said that the use of these additives in food is widespread.
“They are used both in poultry farms and in fish farms, for example for salmon or salmon. These are not artificial substances, but dyes obtained from plants,” Minea told HotNews.ro.

On the other hand, Horia Constantinescu was appointed PSD candidate for the mayor’s office of Constanta.
Business practices that deceive housewives
Later, at PSD headquarters, Constantinescu told the media that the feed that gives the chickens a yellow color is not toxic to birds or humans, but is a “deceptive commercial practice.”
He noted that this method is “pretty big” and that the feed is used to give the impression that it is a “high quality” chicken.
“Unfortunately, the situation is quite large-scale. We have also spoken to other business entities at the industry level who have signaled to us that this situation has been going on for a very long time.
Not being a veterinarian, I’m not very experienced in the field of feeding chickens, but I did research and saw that they are fed certain foods that give color… Not toxic, neither to birds nor to humans, but we Speaking of the practice of deceptive advertising, we are talking about the situation faced by many housewives who choose a yellower chicken from the shelf, somehow knowing from generation to generation that it is as close as possible to the chicken from the yard, from long ago.
But here everything looks completely different, in the sense that the chickens raised for only a few dozen days are supposed to be high-quality chickens, when in fact they were painted, as I said, like a crow,” said the ANPC president.
