Israeli forces besieged two more hospitals in Gaza on Sunday, trapping medical teams under heavy fire, the Palestinian Red Crescent said, while Israel said it had captured 480 militants in ongoing fighting at Gaza’s main al-Shifa hospital, Reuters reported.

Israeli forces say hospitals in the Palestinian enclave, where war has raged for more than five months, have often been used by Hamas militants as bases and weapons depots. Hames and the medical staff deny this.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said one of its staff members was killed when Israeli tanks suddenly entered the areas around Al-Amal and Nasser hospitals in the southern city of Khan Yunis amid heavy shelling and gunfire.

Israel’s armored forces surrounded Al-Amal Hospital and carried out large-scale bulldozing operations near it, the Red Crescent said in a statement, adding: “All our teams are now in extreme danger and completely blocked.”

It stated that Israeli forces are now demanding the full evacuation of staff, patients and displaced persons from the premises of Al-Amal Hospital and are launching smoke grenades into the area to force its residents to leave.

The Israeli military said its forces struck “infrastructure” in Khan Younis, which was used as a staging area for Hamas militants.

The Hamas Health Ministry in Gaza said Israeli forces detained dozens of patients and medical staff in al-Shifa in Gaza City, in the north of the enclave, which has been under Israeli control for a week.

Al-Shifa is one of the few medical facilities that is at least partially functional in northern Gaza, and like the other hospitals, it accommodates nearly 2 million civilians—more than 80 percent of Gaza’s population—displaced by the war.

At least 32,226 Palestinians have been killed, 84 of them in the past 24 hours, and 74,518 wounded in Israel’s air and ground offensive since October 7 on the densely populated coastal enclave, Gaza’s health ministry said in an updated report sent on Sunday.
