Agriculture Minister Florin Barba was asked on the Politic Insider program broadcast on Prima TV on Saturday how much a kilogram of lamb would cost in the run-up to Easter.

“I cannot name an approximate price, because I want it to be an honest market for the sale of lamb during the Easter holidays. From the discussions I had with the farmers, they told me very clearly that they will have a decent price so that they can cover their costs and of course make a small profit because everyone works for this business,” Florin told Barbu on Prima TV.

The Minister of Agriculture does not believe that lamb will be more expensive than last year

The Minister of Agriculture specified that last year a kilogram of lamb “was about 25 lei”. When asked if there will be more this year, the Minister of Agriculture replied: “I don’t think there will be.” I am sure that the Romanian farmers will sell at the right price.”

“I cannot influence the market. If I, as a minister, give a price, I will certainly affect the market. I don’t want to do that. I’m sure that the farmers will have a fair price for the lamb for Romanians,” added Florin Barbu.

The Minister of Agriculture was also asked how many sheep we still export to Arab countries.

“We are net exporters of lamb. 17% of consumption in the EU is provided by Romanian sheep. We export five to six million heads per year. We are a force in the sheep breeding sector. In Arab countries, 90% of imports come from Romania,” explained Barbu.
