​Hossein Vafai produced the biggest surprise at the World Open by knocking out Ronnie O’Sullivan (world leader) in the round of 16, but the Iranian’s adventure at the Chinese tournament ended in the quarterfinals.

World No. 21 Wafaei did not rise to the same level against Ding Junhui and the fan favorite from Yushan managed a whitewash (match won 0).

In Friday’s match, the Chinese managed to make breaks in 73, 74, 135 and 102 points.

After that, the 5-0 host representative will fight for a place in the final with Australian Neil Robertson (former world leader).

Also on Friday, Jackson Page (ranked 52) showed that he is in the prime of his career and beat England’s Elliott Slessor (42) 5-2. The Welshman also knocked out Wu Yzeh, John Higgins and Mark Selby (four-time world champions) at the World Open.

In the semifinals, Paige (22) will face Judd Trump: the winner of the last World Open tournament (in 2019), the second player in the world and the world champion in 2019.

World Open 2024 will be held from March 18 to 24 in Yushan Sport Center (China). The tournament has a total prize pool of £815,000 and the reigning champion is Judd Trump (2019).

A semi-final appearance is rewarded with £32,500, with the finalist receiving £73,000 and the grand champion £170,000.
