The US Air Force announced on Tuesday that it had successfully tested an air-launched hypersonic weapon in the Pacific Ocean, News.ro reported with reference to Reuters.
The test was conducted Sunday after a B-52 bomber departed the island of Guam carrying an Airborne Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), the US Air Force said in a statement.
Although the U.S. Air Force described the test as a success, they did not disclose the speed at which the weapon flew. In previous tests, the ARRW flew at a speed of at least five times the speed of sound.
The United States is not alone in developing hypersonic weapons, whose speed and maneuverability make them difficult to track and intercept.
Russia launched hypersonic missiles at targets in Ukraine, and China tested a hypersonic weapon, US military officials said. However, in October, China’s Foreign Ministry denied that it had conducted tests of such weapons.
