The decision by EU ministers came a day after Russian leader Vladimir Putin claimed a landslide victory in an election that gave him a fifth term as president and which Western governments condemned as unfair and undemocratic, while China, India and North Korea sent their congratulations .

After a meeting in Brussels, Josep Borrell said ministers from the 27 EU member states had agreed to impose sanctions on “about 30 individuals and organizations,” which he did not name, who “are responsible for the killing of Oleksii Navalny,” Reuters and News.ro reported. .

Russian authorities say Navalny, Putin’s most prominent critic, died of natural causes in an Arctic prison on February 16 at the age of 47.

Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalny accused Putin of his murder. Western leaders have said that Putin and the Russian state bear ultimate responsibility for his death.
