State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Raed Arafat, said on Monday that Bucharest remains the most vulnerable area to an earthquake, given the number of buildings that need consolidation or even demolition and reconstruction.

Asked by Digi 24 if the city of Bucharest remains vulnerable to a possible earthquake, Arafat said: “Yes, without a doubt, because of the buildings that still need consolidation or demolition and reconstruction – one of two solutions, it is not an easy process because a building that needs to be consolidated, it is necessary to analyze whether it should be consolidated or whether it should be demolished and built.”

Raed Arafat said that Romania is much better in terms of equipment for intervention.

“In terms of endowment, we are much better, and our endowment is much better than before, without any debate,” the DSU chairman said.

He said that next year there will be drills to prepare for a major earthquake.

“Another big training is ahead next year. It helps us to be prepared and not to forget that our people have already been on the street and proved that they can intervene in such situations. Unfortunately, I was recently in Albania, Turkey, the earthquake in Turkey was extremely tragic and devastating. Romania sent two teams there,” the state secretary said.
