NLP MEP Siegfried Muresan claims that President Klaus Iohannis is one of the leaders with a chance to win the top European post after the European Parliament elections in June. Muresan does not rule out that Iohannis will become the president of the European Council as a result of negotiations between political families. “How is the president of Romania seen at the European level? He is considered a leader who has kept Romania in the European direction for the past 10 years,” Muresan said on Prima TV.
Asked by Prima Tv whether President Klaus Iohannis has a chance to win the European post, Mureşan said that at the start of such a race, politicians are divided into two categories – those who have a chance and those who don’t, and Iohannis would be in list of those who have a chance.
- “How is the president of Romania seen at the European level? He is considered a leader who has kept Romania in the European direction for the past 10 years. Unlike Hungary, unlike Poland, Romania was unequivocally on the side of Ukraine, we have been helping Ukraine since the beginning of the war, I was the main supporter of the Republic of Moldova’s approach to the EU, so in European terms it was and remains an actor of trust, so it has a chance.
- There are several people who target several positions. We will find out who exactly will be in which position after the elections to the European Parliament, and not before. I tell you that he has a chance for an important position,” said Siegfried Muresan, quoted by News.ro.
Answering a question, the MEP from the NLP said that the position of the President of the European Council also falls under the category of “important position”.
- “I am enabling this feature for the following reasons. In the European Council, the president will always be the one who is the president or the prime minister and has the trust of other members of the European Council. Presidents and prime ministers divide the world into two categories: presidents and prime ministers and us, the rest of the world. They will elect one of the members of the Council as the President of the European Council. Currently, the EPP includes 12 of the 27 members of the European Council.
- Next week we will have a rotation of prime ministers in Bulgaria, the vice prime minister of Bulgaria from the EPP will become the prime minister. Portugal has elections on March 10, and the European Center Right Party is leading the socialists – you remember that the chief of staff of the socialist prime minister of Portugal was caught with 80,000 euros in bribes in his office. I think we have a chance to win in Portugal as well.
- The EPP will have 13 or 14 prime ministers, in the zone of absolute majority. Now the Socialists have five of them, the “UPDATE” group has four. If you have 12 or 13 prime ministers, and others have 3-4-5, then it is very difficult for you to leave the management of this body to minority political families. Thus, I would not rule out the idea of a center-right politician who will lead the European Council in the next five years, but we will have certainty only after the elections,” said Siegfried Muresan.
A PNL MEP claims that the EPP, the largest political group in the European Parliament, could win two important positions after the elections in June: both the head of the European Commission and the president of the European Council.
At the moment, the EPP, S&D and RENEW groups make up the majority in the European Parliament. In the EPP family, Romania is represented by PNL, PMP and UDMR, the Socialists are twinned with PSD, and USR and REPER have joined RENEW. After the 2019 European elections, three major European families have divided the most important functions in the EU architecture. The EPP occupies the European Commission (Ursula von Der Leyen) and the European Parliament (Robert Metzola – for half the mandate), the S&D received the post of High Representative for Foreign Policy (Joseph Borrell) and the other half of the mandate at the head of the European Parliament, and the RENEW group was elected the head of the European Council (Charles Michel). Depending on the results of the June 9 election, these three groups will once again share the four main positions.
