Two metro trains collided on Tuesday evening at Timpuri Noi/Octavian Udriște station in the capital after one set entered a line that was already occupied by another. According to digi24, the trains were not running behind each other, but the two sets were facing each other, the trains were touching the couplings. Metrorex reported that there were no injuries.
“We confirm that there has been a rail incident at Timpuri Noi station, which Metrorex has already reported to AGIFER. After that, the competent authorities conduct an investigation of the event and prescribe the necessary measures. One of the trains entered the track occupied by another train, causing the two trains to collide. It should be noted that as a result of this event, there were no casualties or material damage. The travelers were safely disembarked, and train traffic was resumed,” Metrorex reported.
Laurenciu Dumitru, director of the Romanian Railway Investigation Agency, told clubferoviar.ro that the AGIFER team is urgently on its way to the scene of the incident and that, according to the first information, it will be a “train against train” situation. He clarified that the information has not been verified at the moment, and more will be known after the arrival of the investigative team at the scene of the accident.
Subway traffic was disrupted for several tens of minutes, subway stations on Highway 1 were overcrowded.
Metrorex: AGIFER, AFER and COSU are investigating the event
Metrorex says that around 19:15 at Timpuri Noi metro station, “an erroneous route was made on a line occupied by another train”. For this reason, metro traffic between Mihai Bravo and Nicolae Grigorescu stations was reorganized. Passengers at the stations were notified through the public address system.
“Following the railway incident at Timpuri Noi station, Metrorex has informed the bodies investigating railway incidents – AGIFER, AFER, COSU. They will investigate the event, establish its cause and prescribe the necessary measures. The event did not result in casualties or material damage. The travelers were safely disembarked on the platform and trains are currently running under normal conditions,” said a Metrorex press release sent to HotNews.ro.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu, asked the management of Metrorex this evening to present him with a report on the causes of the accident between two metro trains as soon as possible.
“After the investigation of AGIFER is completed, I want the professional management of this company to take measures to prevent such incidents from happening again! The management of Metrorex is chosen on the basis of the corporate governance legislation, which all the more obliges the company to take care of the safety and correct information of citizens,” Sorin told Grindeanu.
