
Former Gorge Prefect and Deputy Dan Ilye Morega, 78, was caught driving again on Monday despite having his license revoked for medical reasons. This is the fourth time in the last two weeks, there are already three criminal cases against him.
Dan Ilie Morega was stopped by the police while driving on Peremogy Boulevard in Tirgu Jiu, writes Pandurul.ro. The local newspaper reports that former prefect Gorge has no longer been allowed to drive since February 6, but he refused to surrender his driver’s license when told by the police.
“This is an illegal event. I didn’t do anything illegal (…) I’m not guilty,” Morega said, according to images published by Gazeta de Sud.
This is the fourth time in the past two weeks that Morega has been caught driving, even though he no longer has the right to do so. Last week, he was filmed speeding through the streets of Tirgu Jiu with traffic lights on his car and drivers ahead flashing to clear his way, according to footage released by Digi 24. He crossed a continuous double line and drove into the oncoming traffic while overtaking .
Gorge County police officials said at the time that the man was at risk of a third felony count of driving without a license and running a traffic light, and he also has two felony counts of driving without a license that were medically dismissed.
Dan Ilie Morega said that on February 6 he would have woken up at the door with the traffic police telling him that he had 15 days from that day to hand in his driver’s license because, based on a medical certificate issued by a psychiatrist in Tirgu Jiu more not allowed to drive, writes Adevărul. Morega refused to hand over his driver’s license, citing the fact that he would challenge it in court.
Morega was a prefect of the Gorges supported by the PDSR, then a PNL deputy and a member of the PRM. He was the subject of several DNA investigations, and in November 2011 he was finally sentenced to a 3-year suspended prison sentence for corruption.
