Strada Lipscani is one of the arteries with the richest and longest history in Bucharest.
Ulița Lipscanilor, even if it was not called that in the beginning, was just a narrow street that connected the commercial center of Bucharest and the Mogoşoai Bridge (old name Calea Victoriei).
It was first mentioned in documents of 1589, when it had the name “Ulița Mare”. Then the ruler of Mihnea Turchytul offers a place on this road, near the royal court, to Jeep Vel Pitaru. This was the moment that marked the beginning of modern Lipscani – more and more shops and inns are being built here.
It got its current name around 1750 and comes from a certain category of merchants, namely the “Lipscans”, who were engaged in the sale of fabrics and linen brought from Leipzig, a city that is called Lipska in our country.
