As reported by AFP, Donald Trump expressed his position on Friday against the much-criticized Alabama court’s decision to treat frozen embryos as children, putting in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in jeopardy in the southern US state.
“Like the vast majority of Americans, including the vast majority of Republicans (…), I strongly support access to IVF for couples trying to have a child,” the former president said on his Truth social network.
The decision by Alabama’s ultra-conservative Supreme Court has already resulted in several IVF clinics in the state being shut down.
In recent days, the case has caused great concern among Republicans, who traditionally defend family values while opposing abortion.
“Under my leadership, the Republican Party will always support the creation of strong American families,” wrote Donald Trump, whose influence on the entire American right is enormous.
On Thursday, his opponent from the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, also spoke out, calling the court’s decision, issued on Friday, February 16, but which came up for public discussion on Tuesday, “scandalous”.
The debate underscores the importance of abortion and reproduction in the campaign nearly two years after the conservative-dominated U.S. Supreme Court struck down constitutional guarantees on abortion, leaving each state free to legislate on the issue.
Faced with the end of in vitro fertilization (IVF) activities at several Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAP) clinics in Alabama, Donald Trump is asking local lawmakers to close the legal vacuum and “quickly find a solution to preserve the availability of in vitro fertilization” in the state.
“Actually, they are already at work. The local senator and his colleagues are working on a solution to ensure that we protect these families and life itself,” said Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, suggesting she supports the move.
After a lawsuit filed by couples who saw their frozen embryos destroyed, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that the 1872 wrongful-death law of minors applied in the case.
“This applies to all children, born and unborn,” Judge Jay Mitchell wrote in a ruling peppered with biblical references.
