Joe Biden’s brother was questioned on Wednesday by members of Congress from the Republican Party, who are investigating the impeachment of the president, accused of lying to the American people about his family’s affairs, AFP reports.

The investigation has been rejected from the start by Democrats, who see it as a political maneuver in the middle of an election year. She has practically no chance of success.

Republicans have questioned James Biden, 74, about a series of financial transactions they say implicate his brother, the Democratic president.

“I have been in business for 50 years (…) Joe Biden has never been involved or had any direct or indirect financial interest in this business. None,” James Biden told the committee, according to multiple media reports.

The right accuses Joe Biden, so far without convincing evidence, of using his influence as Barack Obama’s vice president (2009-2017) to allow his family to run dubious businesses in Ukraine and China.

At the center of the investigation is Joe Biden’s brother and the president’s son Hunter.

But the Republican investigation was weakened by the indictment in mid-February of former FBI informant Oleksandr Smirnov, who is being prosecuted for lying and fabricating false corruption charges against Joe Biden’s son.

The 43-year-old accused Joe and Hunter Biden of receiving five million dollars in bribes each so that the Ukrainian gas company Burisma could avoid criminal prosecution. According to the indictment, this story was fabricated.

On Tuesday, the US Attorney’s Office said that Oleksandr Smirnov admitted to receiving some of the information from people connected to Russian intelligence.

Hunter Biden, a businessman who has now turned to painting, is a favorite target of Republicans, heightening suspicions about his business dealings.

But the ongoing judicial investigation into the president’s son has so far not confirmed these allegations.

Above all, it highlighted his addiction to drugs and alcohol, which he insists he has overcome, and led to two charges against him: one for tax fraud and another for illegal possession of a firearm.
