In announcing the funding on Monday, the tech giant said it had opened applications to social enterprises and nonprofits that could help it reach those most likely to benefit from the training.

Google will also host a series of “growth academies” to help AI companies grow, and has expanded its free online training courses to 18 languages.

“Research shows that the benefits of artificial intelligence may exacerbate existing inequalities, especially in terms of economic security and employment. This new program will help people across Europe build their knowledge, skills and confidence in AI, ensuring that no one is left behind,” said Adrian Brown, chief executive of the Center for Public Impact, which runs the non-profit program with Google.

Last month, Google announced it would invest $1 billion in building a data center near London to meet growing demand for internet services in the region.

The data center, located on a 13-hectare site bought by Google in 2020, will be located in Waltham Cross, about 15 miles north of central London, and is owned by Alphabet, the company said in a statement.
