Mr. Jeanle beat David Popovichi in the 100-meter freestyle
First in the Chinese men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay, the 19-year-old showed an incredible 46.80 seconds, surpassing the previous record of David Popovich (46.86).
After this stunning start, the Chinese team did not look back, remaining in the lead. Following Pan, Ji Xinjie, Zhang Zhanshuo and Wang Hao finished the race with a combined time of 3:11.08.
“Yes, it was an incredible time. I trusted my friends and did my best,” Pan said in a poolside interview.
“Actually, I didn’t feel in great shape. I would be satisfied with just a podium. This morning (in qualifying) USA, Great Britain and Italy were faster than us and I just wanted to focus on doing my job well. I told myself, just swim hard. I was shocked when I saw the time, I did not expect to break the record now – I wanted to leave it for the Olympics in Paris in 2024,” Pan said after the race.
Italy, represented by Alessandro Miressi, Lorenzo Zazzeri, Paolo Conte Bonin and Manuel Frigo, took silver just one second behind China.
Bronze went to the American quartet of Matt King, Shane Casas, Luke Hobson and Carson Foster with a time of 3:12.29.
