Blue cards will soon be introduced in football regulations, with which players who commit tactical fouls or protest against the decisions of the referee will be removed for ten minutes, reports the British edition of The Telegraph, citing the EFE agency.

Ten-minute suspension for those who receive a blue card – Targeted tactical fouls and protests against the referees

This novelty was decided by the body responsible for the rules of the game, the IFAB (International Football Association Board), which will start testing this type of sanction in first division matches this summer.

This will be the first time a new disciplinary card has been introduced since the use of yellow and red cards at the 1970 World Cup.

This new protocol, which The Telegraph reports will be announced today (Friday), will limit blue cards to fouls that interrupt “promising attacks” or player protests.

Also, a player will be banned permanently if they receive two blue cards or one blue and one yellow card, and vice versa.

To allow the new rules to take effect, top flight matches will initially be excluded from the rule, although the FA want it to apply to Cup matches (men’s and women’s) next season.

In addition, the new cards will not be used either at EURO 2024 in Germany or at the upcoming Champions League draw.

Instead, UEFA president Aleksandar Ceferin recently told The Telegraph that he was strongly against the move, saying “it’s not about football anymore”.

In addition, according to the same publication, the IFAB would approve that only team captains can communicate with referees, as is the case in rugby.

IFAB officials believe that players’ attitudes are a “cancer that is killing football” and have therefore decided to intervene to stop fouls that prevent goalscoring opportunities but do not meet the conditions to receive a red card, reports Agerpres.
