Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized US Republican senators after they voted to block a bill on financial support for Ukraine.
“Dear Republican Senators of America. Ronald Reagan, who helped millions of us regain freedom and independence, is turning in his grave today. Shame on you!” the center-right politician wrote in a post on X, referring to the late US president, a Republican icon who was a vocal supporter of the Polish social movement Solidarity in the 1980s.
The extremely strong criticism from politicians in Warsaw’s most important bilateral security partner came after the US Senate blocked a bipartisan $118 billion bill that would provide funding for Ukraine, Israel and US border security. Through this draft law, Kyiv would receive financial assistance in the amount of 60 billion dollars.
Only 4 of 49 Republican senators voted for the package, proposed last October by the White House and debated by a bipartisan team of senators for months.
“Something [colegi] they told me very clearly that they had political differences on the bill. They’re saying it’s wrong to solve the problem, to let the presidential election solve the problem,” said Sen. James Lankford, the top Republican negotiating the bill.
A $60 billion aid package for Ukraine has been stalled in Congress for months amid opposition from conservatives who see it as wasteful and push for an exit strategy from the war.
On Wednesday morning, the Russians launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine. One of the missiles flew towards the border with Poland, then turned around and headed for Lviv in southwestern Ukraine. However, the authorities said that another missile hit an industrial facility in Drohobych, 50 kilometers from the border with Poland.
The armed forces of Poland constantly monitor the situation on the territory of Ukraine.
