The mayor of Konstanz, Virgil Citzak, who is being prosecuted by the DNA for abuse of office, claims that the prosecutor is behind the case and wants to embarrass him.
Virgil Kitsats says that he is undoubtedly an honest person.
“What I can tell you is, I’m not going to go into detail because I signed a non-disclosure agreement that I made with my lawyer and it feels right to me. There is no doubt about my integrity and I can tell you that there is no trace of corruption in this file. This is an attempt to compromise me,” Mayor Konstanzi said on Digi24 on Wednesday evening.
Virgil Kitsak claims that the prosecutor is behind the case.
“Yes. This is an attempt not by the prosecutor’s office, but by the prosecutor, to compromise me, which concerns the entire election year of 2024, including the presidential elections. This is a political stick, and that’s enough,” said the PNL mayor.
When asked about which prosecutor it will be, the mayor of Constanta did not want to elaborate.
“Let’s see how this file develops, and when everything becomes clear and public, we can and I promise we will discuss in detail. But at the moment the case is not even in court. I had another file, it was also leaked and my political detractors took care of it, they were extremely, extremely vocal, with aggressive rhetoric and guess what, it was appreciated,” he added.
Virgil Kitsak also said he has not yet decided whether he will run for a new term as mayor in this year’s local elections, but he said he would make a decision about it “as soon as possible”.
DNA charges against Constanța Mayor Virgil Kitzak
In July 2023, DNA announced that Vergil Chitsak, who was mayor in his first term, was under investigation for abuse of office, as well as Alin Vintila, the executive director of Constanta City Hall, who is being investigated for complicity in abuse of office, and Andrii Talpes, the president of the City Council Sports Club “Municipal Constanta” is being investigated for involvement in abuse of office and blackmail.
Charges brought by prosecutors:
- In 2023, on the occasion of a sports event held in the Municipality of Constanta by an association consisting of five organizations (which also included the City Hall of Constanta, the Municipal Sports Club of Constanta (CSM), the Romanian Yachting Federation (FRY) and a company based in Monaco), Virgil Shitzak, accused by two other persons and breaking the law, would have approved the financing of the whole event.
- In particular, the financing of sports competitions would be carried out by the City Hall of Constanta without a financial contract, which was concluded after a public selection procedure and without a preventive financial control visa or any report from a specialized department.
- Since, thanks to the “understanding” of some parties, it would have been established that the money received as a result of the financing would go to the accounts of the company located in Monaco (provided that it would not perform clearly defined activities within the relevant event), Andrey Talpesh allegedly forced several people from the management of the Romanian Yachting Federation to force them to pay approximately €290,000 to this company.
- Under the above conditions, the total amount of 1,728,000 lei would be transferred to the accounts of the commercial company in Monaco, an amount that constitutes losses for the City Hall of Constanta.
