Cristian Popescu Piedone claims that he will enter the race for the capital city hall if the PNL and PSD “continue the dispute”. The mayor of sector 5 says that he does not give up his declared support for Gabriela Firea, but if “insolence prevails” among the social democrats and liberals, he will run for office.
“If I see that there is no candidate for the capital city hall, in which I and the social-liberal mayors from Bucharest… I will go and fight for the capital city. (…) I make a public appeal to the two great poles of power in Romania, the PSD and the PNL, to complete the nomination of their candidates. If they keep fighting and don’t get along… They should stop airing their laundry in public… I will run for mayor of the Capital. PUSL made a statement in support of Gabriela Firea. We do not refuse this support. (…) If I see that these political intrigues contribute more to pride than to the interests of the citizen, I have no problem throwing myself into battle. I did not say that I am definitely running for the capital mayor’s office,” said Christian Popescu Piedone at a meeting of the PUSL party.
These statements take place in the context of the fact that Gabriela Firea, who wants to run for mayor of the capital from PSD, has been postponed by the decision of the party leadership.
Gabriela Firea, who declared herself PSD’s “candidate” for the capital’s mayor’s office, says that if the party does not nominate her as a candidate, she will support sector mayors Robert Negoitse and Daniel Beluce, both from PSD, or Cristian Popescu Piedone from the humanist social-liberal the party founded by Dan Voiculescu. However, Negoice and Beluce announced that they will not run for the capital city hall and want to get a new mandate in the 3rd and 4th sectors.
