Canada on Tuesday imposed sanctions on 11 leaders and supporters of Hamas, who, according to Ottawa, are behind the unprecedented attack of the Palestinian Islamist movement in Israel on October 7, AFP and Agerpres inform
The sanctions, which include an asset freeze and a travel ban on Canada, come two weeks after similar announcements by the United Kingdom and the United States against some of Hamas’ financiers.
Canadian sanctions include Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the alleged mastermind of the October 7 attack, military leader Mohammed Deif and senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad official Akram al-Ajuri.
The Ottawa press release said the individuals were targeted because of their role in Hamas or their involvement “in the planning, financing and execution of terrorist attacks against Israel on October 7.”
“Canada unequivocally condemns Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel, its unacceptable treatment of hostages and its abhorrent use of sexual and gender-based violence as a tactic of war,” Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie said Tuesday.
Since 2002, Hamas has been on the Canadian government’s list of “terrorist” organizations.
