Defense Minister Angel Tilvar said on Monday evening that the re-introduction of compulsory military service in Romania is out of the question and there is no discussion on this matter. Tilvar states that the strength of the Romanian army has decreased from 320,000 men to about 80,000, and there is a need to prepare some reserves, but this will be done with the help of volunteer soldiers, in this sense the project involves people between the ages of 18 and 35.
“This is a time when things related to the army cause such concern. Compulsory military service is excluded (…) there are currently no discussions on this matter,” said Minister Angel Tilvar on Monday evening on Euronews Romania, according to News.ro.
At the same time, the Minister of Defense explained that the existence of voluntary military service, the purpose of which is to meet the army’s need for a reserve, is being discussed.
He clarified that there is a project that provides several months of military training for people aged 18-35. “We don’t know how it will happen, we are in the phase where we are discussing it,” the minister said.
According to Tilvar, the Romanian army numbered over 320,000 men to about 80,000.
“From a quantitative point of view, the army has decreased, and the operational needs are such as they are and have not been in Europe for a long time,” added the Minister of Defense.
“Romania is not at risk of war, it is not at risk of attack”
However, he firmly asserts that there is no war.
“Romania is not at risk of war, it is not at risk of attack. This does not mean that from this point of view it should not be consistent and consistent with what is happening in other armies. And the level of military equipment has increased, the effectiveness of military equipment has increased. But there is always a need to update and have available people in the situation,” Angel Tilvar also stated.
The Chief of the Defense Staff, General Giorgice Vlad, said that it is desirable to introduce voluntary military service aimed at young people between the ages of 18 and 35 who wish to wear a military uniform. He noted that it is necessary to find the necessary tools to have a trained population. “This is a T0 moment when all European countries should think about preparing the population, and I don’t want to sound the alarm, but this is the reality we live in,” he argued.

More and more European countries are warning about the danger of war with Russia
Poland’s defense minister on Monday became the latest official in Europe to warn that his country must urgently prepare for the threat of war with Russia.
The comments, made by Polish Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on Monday, came after several senior officials from countries including Britain, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands warned that their countries and the EU should be prepared for conflict with Russia.
General Giorgice Vlad, the chief of defense staff in Bucharest, issued a similar warning last Friday.
However, Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku stated that it is not necessary to prepare for war with Russia and repeatedly assured that such a scenario is unlikely.
