Sweden’s prosecutor investigating the 2022 explosions at the Baltic Sea’s Nord Stream gas pipeline will announce this week whether he will take the case to court or drop it, Sweden’s public prosecutor’s office said on Monday, as cited by Reuters.
The announcement by the prosecutor’s office was made after the information first appeared in the Swedish press, published by the daily newspaper Expressen. However, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said Monday afternoon that no date had been set for the findings of the investigation.
Two Nord Stream gas pipelines connecting Russia to Germany were damaged by a series of underwater explosions that were recorded in September 2022 in the exclusive economic zones of Sweden and Denmark.
Shortly after the investigation into the incident began, Sweden announced the discovery of traces of explosives on the seabed, suggesting that the damage to the gas pipelines was the result of sabotage.
Danish police, which are conducting their own investigation, declined to comment on the case on Monday.
There are no official explanations for the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines
The explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines remain one of the biggest mysteries since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, several independent media investigations have come to different conclusions.
Recently, the American newspaper The Washington Post wrote last November, citing anonymous sources who, according to it, were familiar with the case, that the order for sabotage was given by a Ukrainian colonel with the approval of General Valery Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of the Kyiv forces.
However, a large-scale investigation by journalists from all Scandinavian broadcasters has shown that last spring’s Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions may be linked to a “ghost fleet” that Russia is deploying in the North Sea.
Russia accused Great Britain, the United States and Ukraine of organizing the bombings and complained that it was not invited to an international investigation into the causes of the bombings.
