UDMR President Kelemen Hunor said on Thursday about combining the elections to the European Parliament with local ones that “from a constitutional point of view it is possible”, but “legally not yet”, but there is still time, also mentioning the question of the political possibility of these decisions.

“Such an option with combining elections to the European Parliament with local elections is possible from a constitutional point of view, but from a legal point of view it is still impossible. First, it is necessary to change the Administrative Code, as well as to change the legislation, the law on elections of local authorities, mayors and local councils. But from the constitutional point of view it is possible. It’s time, because you’re not changing the system, you’re just making it possible to take the oath later than the current law requires. You don’t make two rounds out of one round, you don’t change the rules of the game, you only change the date. So, from a constitutional point of view, it is possible, from a legal point of view – it is not possible. There remains the question of political expediency and the question of whether or not you will confuse the electorate. The commission from Venice has its point of view, okay, this is a recommendation,” said Kelemen Hunor on Europa FM, reports Agerpres.

He says that it is necessary to discuss the political expediency of such a decision, talking about possible “administrative chaos”.

“We need to ask these three questions: constitutionality, legality and political expediency. The political possibility is being discussed. There are pros and cons. The arguments against, from my point of view, can be formulated as follows: administrative chaos (…). Someone will spend money, someone will do nothing for three and a half months. So there will be administrative chaos, which will create nervousness and public indignation before the parliamentary and presidential elections. Plus, at some point, the problem of the majority will arise. All summer long, until we reach the parliamentary elections or the end of the term of office and the entry into a new mandate, majorities will be formed, majorities will be canceled. Therefore, from my point of view, it will be administrative and even political chaos,” said the leader of the UDMR.

Kelemen Hunor also mentioned the impact of this decision on limiting the rise of far-right forces.

“We have to be very clear, through this kind of movement you can limit the growth of far-right forces, and that’s good from a democratic point of view in the medium term, in the long term, because they don’t have local apparatuses. which mobilize,” he said.

The UDMR leader added that, on the other hand, it is not a question of the electorate being confused by the fact that there are several elections a year.

“The electorate is large. So there is no need to fear that the electorate will not be able to handle five ballots. However, we are in the 21st century. The vast majority of voters know, sir, and whether the election is joint or not… those who vote PSD will vote PSD no matter how many ballots are available and vice versa, who votes PNL or USR or UDMR, etc.,” stated Kelemen Hunor.
