27 participating countries have agreed on multi-year aid to Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said. It is currently unclear how Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who blocked the package at a December meeting and has threatened to do so again, was persuaded to waive his veto.

“We have come to an agreement. Unity,” said Michel on Kh.’s social network.

“All 27 leaders agreed on an additional support package for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros from the EU budget. This guarantees stable, long-term and predictable financing for Ukraine. The EU takes the initiative and responsibility in supporting Ukraine; we know what’s at stake,” he added.

It should be noted that Charles Michel’s post appeared less than ten minutes after his press secretary announced the official start of the summit.

However, before the official start of the summit on Thursday morning, there were talks with Viktor Orbán, which were attended by Charles Michel, EC President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Parliament President Roberta Metzola.
