This will be Putin’s first visit to a NATO member state after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, writes Agerpres.

Since then, the Russian president has sharply limited his foreign trips, especially after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him last March for the deportation of some Ukrainian children to Russia.

Turkey is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, which regulates the activities of the ISS, so Putin can travel to that country without fear of being arrested.

Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, Turkey has been trying to maintain good relations with both Moscow and Kyiv. During this time, Ankara provided Ukraine with military equipment and expressed support for its territorial integrity, but in return opposed Western sanctions against Russia.

Currently, Turkey is trying to convince Russia to return to the agreement, which until last July allowed the export of Ukrainian grain through a safe maritime corridor through the Black Sea.
