According to the online database of price comparison portal Numbeo, the most expensive place to live in Europe at the beginning of 2024 was Zurich, Switzerland.

The Numbeo Index summarizes and compares the prices of consumer goods such as food, restaurants, transportation, household energy and utilities.

The data for each city is then multiplied by the cost of living in New York, which is considered equal to 100. Therefore, living in a city with a cost of living index of 120 is about 20% more expensive than in New York (excluding rent), according to Magyar Nemzet , as quoted by Rador Radio Romania.

Geneva, also in Switzerland, is second only to Zurich. In third place is the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. The most expensive cities are usually located in Western Europe, and the cheapest – in the eastern half of the continent.

Living in Bratislava is the most expensive in Eastern Europe, while living in the Polish capital, Warsaw, is several percent cheaper (46.2) than in Budapest.

Hungary is the 30th cheapest country in Europe in terms of average cost of living. And here Switzerland takes first place (114.3), and Austria is more expensive (67.3) than Germany (63.5) or Sweden (62.5).
