American Terry Martin, who almost 20 years ago stole Hollywood’s most famous red shoes worn by Judy Garland in the movie “The Wizard of Oz,” was sentenced to one year of probation on Monday, AFP reports.
According to the New York Times, the 76-year-old will remain on medical parole, and the man was hospitalized for palliative care with less than six months to live.
Prosecutors did not seek jail time for Martin, who appeared in court in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank.
Dorothy’s famous sequined shoes mysteriously disappeared in 2005 from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, the actress’ hometown.
Then, as if by magic, but mostly thanks to the FBI, in 2018 the precious accessories — one of four pairs left over from the 1939 film — resurfaced.
Terry Martin explained that he stole the shoes, believing them to be encrusted with real rubies, and then tried to sell them on the black market.
Over the years, the value of the reward offered for finding the shoes has skyrocketed, with one patron going so far as to offer a million dollars. Prosecutors in North Dakota now put their value at $3.5 million.
According to the Department of Justice, these ruby shoes are “considered one of the most famous props in American film history.”
In the musical adaptation of the novel of the same name, the young heroine Dorothy clicks her heels three times to fulfill her most cherished wish: to return home to Kansas.
