The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, warned that reducing the aid that the United States provides to his country would be an inappropriate signal in the context of blocking a new aid package for Ukraine in the US Congress, AFP reports.
“Passivity or lack of support from the United States would be a bad signal. It would be unfair for no one,” the Ukrainian head of state said in an interview broadcast by German public television ZDF on Sunday, Agerpres reports.
“The United States is our number 1 partner,” he emphasized.
After supplying Kiev with tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Joe Biden’s administration ran out of loans at the end of last year.
As a result, the US president asked Congress to approve another $61 billion, but negotiations with Republicans, who also touch on immigration, are dragging on.
The last delivery of American aid to Ukraine was announced on December 27, and the White House reiterated that in the absence of a supplement to the budget, there will be no other tranche.
Faced with this impasse, Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked Germany to use its economic power to mobilize its European partners to provide much-needed aid to Kyiv.
“Many countries maintain important economic relations with Germany, and their economies depend on Germany’s decisions because it has a strong economy. Germany can succeed in strengthening support for the EU,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday appealed to his European partners to strengthen their arms commitments. “Europe should do more to support Ukraine in self-defense,” Scholz told the weekly Die Zeit.
As for the political situation in the United States, Zelensky was optimistic about the possibility of Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential elections at the end of the year, in the context of which the Republican billionaire is considered less favorable to support Kyiv.
“I don’t think that the entire US policy depends on one person,” he said, assessing that “the vast majority of Democrats and Republicans support Ukraine.”
