The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, Niku Popescu, announced on Wednesday that he resigned after completing his key tasks related to the country’s rapprochement with the European Union, according to the news agency MOLDPRES and Reuters.

“In order to avoid any misinterpretation as to the reason for my resignation, I clearly emphasize that I have successfully fulfilled the foreign policy objectives established together and with President Maia Sandu at the beginning of this mandate. And at this point I need a break. At the same time, I assure you that I will continue to contribute to the leadership team’s efforts to join the Republic of Moldova to the European Union and to continuously ensure peace, stability and tranquility in our country,” said Nico Popescu during the meeting. press conference, reports Agerpres.

The head of Chisinau’s diplomacy summed up the results of recent years and noted that during his tenure as a minister, he held more than 160 bilateral meetings at the level of foreign ministers.

“At these meetings, I managed to strengthen and continue the dialogue with 55 countries of the world. I made 76 visits abroad, of which 23 visits took place in Brussels. During this entire period, about 50 of my colleagues from the partner states of the Republic of Moldova visited the Republic of Moldova,” Popescu added.

“In recent years, we applied for joining the European Union. We became a candidate state for accession and firmly and irrevocably established the Republic of Moldova in the large European family. The joining process takes place with the best dynamics. Already at today’s (Wednesday) executive session, we will adopt the necessary changes to the national plan for joining the European Union,” the minister concluded.
