A 31-year-old Moldovan man was arrested in Croatia on Friday for human trafficking after being chased in the Croatian capital Zagreb, News.ro reported, citing AFP.

The Moldovan man was carrying 32 migrants in a van, two of whom were injured after he crashed into a police car, police said.

The driver refused to stop at a police checkpoint on the highway connecting Zagreb and Split.

“Disregarding traffic rules, he continued to drive in Zagreb” and ended up getting into a police car, the law enforcement agency said in a statement.

A 31-year-old Moldovan was detained for human trafficking.

Croatia – a member state of the European Union (EU) that joined the Schengen area in 2023 – is on the “Balkan route”, a migration route used by migrants trying to enter the EU illegally.

Almost 63,000 people entered Croatia illegally from January to October 2023, mainly Afghans, Turks, Moroccans and Pakistanis, according to official data.
