Ukraine is “intensively” working with its partners to restore air traffic, which was suspended for almost two years, and is mainly aimed at Boryspil International Airport, located on the outskirts of the capital Kyiv, an official from President Zelenskyi’s office said on Thursday. .

Ukraine’s airspace was suddenly closed following Russia’s invasion in February 2022 due to risks to civil aviation security, and anyone wanting to reach Ukraine must use road or rail routes from neighboring countries, Reuters and Agerpres reported.

The authorities of Kyiv consider the resumption of air transport as the goal of the victory of the Ukrainian economy.

“I don’t want to create inflated expectations… but I can tell you that we are working hard to restore air traffic in Ukraine,” Deputy Head of President Zelenskyi’s Administration Rostyslav Shurma said during a panel discussion at The Davos Forum on Thursday.

Ukrainians consult with specialists from Israel

Shurma refused to name the timetable for the possible resumption of air transportation, but noted that Ukraine has a “road map and internal schedule.”

Shurma also said that the authorities in Kyiv are consulting with specialists in Israel regarding the technical characteristics that will allow the process of resuming air traffic, without giving further details. Israel has a long history of using air defense systems to protect its infrastructure.

“We have to get the necessary permits from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is not easy. And it depends more on the bold decisions of international partners, which we believe we will achieve,” Shurma said.

The quoted official also noted that Ukraine is analyzing the possibility of resuming the operation of either the Boryspil airport or another airport in the Lviv region, but the priority is the international airport located on the outskirts of the capital Kyiv.

In December of last year, a Boeing 777-300 aircraft took off from Boryspil airport and performed a technical flight, which testifies to the serviceability of the airport’s infrastructure.
