Emma Reducanu defeated by Yafan Wang in the second round of the Australian Open 2024

Recently back on the tennis court (she has undergone operations on both hands and ankles), Reducanu is ranked 296 in the WTA rankings, but she entered the main draw in Melbourne after several players withdrew (she was using a protected ranking).

After defeating Sorana Kirstea in the first round (comeback from 0-6, 0-3), Yafan Wang pulled off another surprise by knocking out the US Open 2021 champion.

Emma scored more field goals (45-42), but made almost twice as many unforced errors (57-32).

The athlete from China won after an almost three-hour match with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Know:

  • In the next round, Yafan Wang will face compatriot Qinwen Zheng (12th seed), who beat Katie Boulter (another Great Britain player, 54th WTA) 6-3, 6-3.
  • Reducanu was also stopped in the second round of the Australian Open in 2022 and 2023.
  • Emma was coached at her first Grand Slam this year by Nick Cavaday, who was also with her in her younger years.

Australian Open 2024 will be held from January 14 to 28. The reigning champions are Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenko.
