The protest by Sanitas union activists began at 9:30 a.m. They went to the Ministry of Finance with supermarket baskets filled with water, pretzels and toilet paper, saying it was the only money they had left after paying taxes and bills.

They say the protest is the “first step towards a general strike” in the health and social care systems.

Sanitas demonstrators carry placards with messages such as “Former heroes of the pandemic, the salary is lower than at the city hall”, “Exhausted”, “Don’t let health die”.

Protesters demand to initiate a general strike in the health care system, collection of the necessary number of signatures for the petition ends on January 18.

  • “We are present at the ministry, which is responsible for managing public funds, to demand a minimum 20% salary increase for all professional categories working in the field of health care and social assistance!
  • The governors must understand that our patience, the patience of the workers of the two industries, is exhausted. We no longer accept delays, false explanations or empty promises.
  • We no longer accept wage increase guarantees with reference to the new wage law. The law was already supposed to enter into force on January 1 of this year, but at the moment it is not even at the stage of a completed project,” said representatives of Sanitas.

Also on Thursday, the trade union of employees of the National Council on Anti-Discrimination announced that the employees of the institution started a spontaneous protest, demanding “respect for the rights and legitimate interests of employees.”

  • “We expect concrete actions and a real show of respect for our work and contribution, which is important for every citizen of the country.
  • It is time for the government to show responsibility and respect for every employee of our institution and for the work done in the service of citizens, both public servants and the only institution that campaigns and promotes the protection of the principle of equality and equal treatment in the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms.” – says the statement of the trade union of employees of the National Council on Combating Discrimination, sent on Thursday.

The CNCD union says the facility’s workers face the following issues:

  • insufficient payment of labor, wage inequality;
  • the pressure was placed entirely on the responsibility of a very small number of employees who ensure the fulfillment of the actual object of the institution’s activity;
  • an extreme shortage of personnel compared to the workload, understaffing in view of the specifics of activities aimed at eliminating the causes of discrimination;
  • lack of direct designation of the institution within the framework of the Law – framework no. 153/2017 regarding staff salaries paid from state funds;
  • insufficient budget for day-to-day activities;
  • existence of a significant difference in wages with similar institutions by object of activity (People’s Advocate).
