Maria Sakkari (two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist) crashed out of the 2024 Australian Open in the second round as the eighth seed at the Grand Slam was defeated by Elina Avanesian (world No. 74).

Eighth seed Maria Sakkari crashed out in the second round of the Australian Open

Sakkari lost the match in straight sets, 4-6, 4-6. There were three breaks per set, noting that each time Maria lost two games on her own serve.

The game ended after one hour and 44 minutes.

Know:

  • The Greek’s best result in Melbourne is reaching the fourth round: in 2020 and 2022.
  • For the eighth place, Elina Avanesyan will have to fight with Marta Kostyuk (the athlete from Ukraine was eliminated by Elise Mertens, favorite 25).
  • On the other hand, for the Russian Elina, reaching the third round is already the best result since the Australian Open.
  • Other favorites also left the Australian major on Wednesday: Ons Jaber (seeded sixth) and Caroline Garcia (seeded 16th).
