USR spokesman Ionuc Mostianu said on Monday regarding Kimpulung Mayor Elena Lasconi’s independent candidacy in the local elections that anything is possible in politics and that any party that produces a good person will suffer. He said that he would never want her to leave the party, that the USR would support her if she decided to run outside the party.

USR Spokesperson Ionuc Mostianu told Prima News that Olena Lasconi has resigned from the USR Argeş District Office. “She no longer holds any position in Argeş,” Mostianu said, adding that “she probably wants to focus on the mayor’s projects.”

“I’m going to see Elena at the end of the week,” Mostianu said.

When asked whether she will be able to run independently in this year’s local elections, Mostianu answered: “Everything is possible in politics.”

“Any batch from which a good person leaves will suffer, I would never want Elena to leave and any of the valuable colleagues who are acting in this batch, but the reality is that it will happen. Someone will leave, someone will come, this is the dynamic in any party, we are not the first and not the last party from which people leave or come. I would like him to stay with us, we have built well so far and I think we can continue to do that,” Mostianu said, as quoted by News.ro.

Ionuc Mostianu also stated that “USR will still move forward” and specified that he would like Elena Lasconi to continue her projects in Kimpulung.

Asked whether USR would nominate its candidate if Olena Lasconi leaves the party and runs as an independent candidate, Mostianu said: “USR will support her.”

The scandal that led to the removal of Olena Lasconi from the list of UDR MEPs

On November 18, 2023, USR Vice-President Claudio Nesui announced that former party leader Dan Barna would open a list of candidates for the formation’s European Parliament elections after Elena Lasconi was withdrawn from the post.

Elena Lasconi, who launched the USR list in the European Parliament elections, said that she voted “YES” in the referendum on the traditional family in 2018. “I am a Christian, I am Orthodox and I believe that a family consists of a woman and a man,” she said on November 4, 2023, on Prima TV.

The strongest reaction was his daughter Oana Lasconi, who tearfully announced in an Instagram post that she was “in shock and absolutely disgusted”, saying: “This cruel discrimination has no place in my family and for that reason I will no longer supports the mother.”

The next day, the National Bureau of the UDR took note of Olena Lasconi’s removal from the list of candidates for the European Parliament elections, according to the press release of the formation. USR representatives added that Elena Lasconi will continue to work in Campalungeni and will have the support of the party to continue working in the administration.
