Republican presidential candidates focused on a chilly final day of campaigning in Iowa on Monday, where Donald Trump is the front-runner to claim the party’s 2024 presidential nomination early, Reuters reported.
The former president’s dominance has turned Iowa’s first-place race into a second-place race, as both Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley seek the top spot to become the second-leading Trump alternative.
“If you’re willing to brave the cold and vote for me, I’ll fight for you for the next eight years and we’ll change this country,” DeSantis told the crowd at Sergeant’s Bluff.
Trump’s landslide victory in Iowa will strengthen his case that he is the only Republican candidate capable of challenging Democratic President Joe Biden in the November election.
It will also create problems for his rivals, including DeSantis, who made a bet in the Iowa caucuses on Monday, pouring resources into the Midwestern state and covering all of its 99 counties.
A third-place finish could prove fatal to DeSantis’ prospects. Polls show the Florida governor trailing Trump and Haley in the more moderate state of New Hampshire, where Republicans will choose their nominee in eight days.
Both DeSantis and Haley expressed confidence they would exceed expectations in Iowa, though neither predicted victory.
Moreover, Haley hinted that “other candidates will have to drop out” in the coming weeks. “It’s going to be a two-way race with me and Donald Trump,” she told supporters.
Unlike his rivals, Trump did not attend campaign events, instead relying on speaking engagements and messaging to mobilize supporters.
“We know him, we trust him, and he’s the kind of person we need in the White House,” Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green told Reuters.
