GSP visited Leonard Doroftei in Montreal, where the former world champion opened a boxing gym in an industrial shop in mid-December. Having left the country in 2019, “Leonard Dorin” – the professional boxing stage name – cannot be found in Montreal and wants to return to Romania.
Doroftei talked about the last part of his career and his retirement.
“Insomnia started even before I left. I started to go into the chat, I was already awake. The last period of my career was exhausting. I couldn’t concentrate properly, I couldn’t concentrate anymore. I was no longer motivated. I have achieved my goal. I was a champion. I had nothing else in mind, for example, to strive to become a three-time champion. I caught myself. After the withdrawal, I missed training.”
Post-abstinence syndrome was manifested, in particular, by chronic insomnia:
“My problem is that I can’t sleep at night. For 15 years I did not sleep a single night in Romania. She did not go to the doctor. I kept going off the pills. At night, I drank a glass of dry red wine and turned on the TV, hoping to fall asleep. In the morning I fell asleep, slept for several hours. I couldn’t stand it anymore from fatigue.”
