According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden and his main Republican challenger, former President Donald Trump, enter the election year with even margins as many Americans appear unenthusiastic about their choice.
On Monday, as the Iowa caucuses open, 35 percent of respondents said they would vote for Biden, and the same percentage who said they would vote for Trump.
Almost a third of respondents indicated that they did not support any of the candidates. About 13% said they would not vote, while 9% said they would support another candidate and 8% said they were not sure.
When respondents were forced to choose between the two, they split evenly (48%).
The survey revealed a clear interest in university candidates. Anti-vaccination activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., scion of a famous political dynasty running as an independent, received the support of 18 percent of respondents when included as an option.
That dropped Biden’s support in a three-way showdown to 29% and Trump’s to 30%.
The online poll of 4,677 American adults was conducted across the country, not focusing on specific early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire.
But it shows that Biden and Trump are starting the year as strong favorites for their party’s nomination.
Trump leads his Republican rivals by more than 37 percentage points, while neither of Biden’s two contenders for the Democratic nomination has more than 2 percent of the party’s voter support.
The poll reflected the polarized state of American politics, with 76 percent of Democrats saying they would vote for Biden in the Nov. 5 election, while 76 percent of Republicans said they would support Trump.
Independent voters were not happy with either candidate. Only 17% said they would vote for Trump, while 11% said they would support Biden. At the same time, 41% of this group will not vote at all.
The online poll was conducted from January 3 to 9 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
