A Bucharest man who was detained by SWAT police after he smashed the window of a woman’s house, threatened her and then barricaded himself in his own apartment, says his detention is “a big abuse by the Romanian police”. We will remind you that he is a retired policeman and the leader of the branch of the Mișcarea Romania Suverană party, which is headed by the former Minister of the Interior Carmen Dan and supported by the former PSD leader Liviu Dragnia.

“This is a big abuse by the Romanian police,” the man told reporters, according to images published by Digi 24.

When asked if he argued with his neighbors and reminded them, he answered: “No, no. 7 out of 10 Romanians threaten themselves. For this I have to be in handcuffs?”.

Also, when asked if he had conflicts with his neighbors, the former policeman answered: “I have two more files. Only two files.”

Cătălin Coman (56 years old) was detained by the police on Monday evening after he was taken by the Special Action Service fighters from his apartment in Bucharest, where he had barricaded himself. A man locked himself in an apartment after threatening a neighbor and breaking a window in her house.

As HotNews was told in court, the man – a retired police officer – is still being investigated in two other criminal cases, which are in the 18th police department under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office of the 5th district court.

What is the former policeman being prosecuted for:

  • On May 19, 2022, after a conflict with a person who parked a car in front of the gate of the house where he lives, the man allegedly deflated the tires of the car and threatened the driver.
  • On June 7, 2022, he threatened to kill a man who parked in front of the building in May 2022.

The man is the leader of the branch managed by Carmen Dan

The man is the leader of the branch of the Mișcarea Romania Suverană party, which is led by former interior minister Carmen Dan and supported by ex-PSD leader Liviu Dragnea.

In addition, he was involved in a scandal that erupted in late 2017 after former Interior Minister Carmen Dan said she found a microphone installed in his home, Antena 3 reported.

In May 2018, the Prosecutor General’s Office closed the open proceedings in this case, establishing that it was not a violation of housing and private life, as claimed by Carmen Dan. According to investigators, the microphone was not working and had been installed by two men who had been called specifically to check whether there was recording equipment in the apartment rented by the interior minister in Bucharest. According to the quoted source, they were invited by a relative of Carmen Dan, and therefore we cannot talk about domestic violence.

In a statement sent on Monday, Carmen Dan, president of the Movement for Sovereign Romania, a party backed by former PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, responded to the scandal involving the ex-policeman:

  • “Participation of Mr. Katalin Coman in the scandal related to acts of domestic violence will be politically sanctioned by the IRS. As you know, we initiated and made changes to the legislation to make the prevention and fight against domestic violence more effective. The public behavior of any member of the party must comply with social norms, so we will analyze within the institutional framework of the MRS the measures that must be taken in this case. Of course, once the ongoing investigation is completed, we will know the results.
  • Regarding the comments related to the possible participation of Mr. Coman (who is indeed the president of MRS, Sector 5 Bucharest) in the action to implement the ecological monitoring method in my personal space, I note that I am not in a position to comment on the decisions taken by the competent prosecutor’s office, which investigated the case. The case, as far as I know, is closed without initiating a criminal case.”

Carmen Dan argues that “The Sovereign Romania Movement is much more than a source of sensationalist scandals.”
