A Maasai shield, a writing and desk clock, a traditional coffee set, a painting in wine are among the items that President Klaus Iohannis received for free last year on the occasion of protocol events, reports Agerpres.

The gifts received by the head of state in 2023 have a total value of 7,600 euros (37,787.20 lei), according to the list of goods received for free on the occasion of protocol promotions and submitted to the Evaluation Commission under the Presidential Administration.

Two paintings painted by Alina Chuchiu in acrylics are the most expensive gifts received by President Iohannis last year. The cost of two works is 1,500 euros (7,458 lei).

What were the most expensive gifts received by Klaus Iohannis

  • * a Hilser desk and table clock, made for Grant Macdonald London, in metal and silver, gold-plated, with blue and white mother-of-pearl and enamel inlays, with traditional Arabic numerals and motifs and a gold-plated Arab Emirates Unite crest, packed in a leather box, valued at €830 (4126.76 lei);
  • * a painting on canvas, with a wooden frame and a wooden box with three drawers, with carved elephants, worth 420 euros (2,088.24 lei);
  • * Hanlig carpet from Karabakh, Azerbaijan, hand-woven from soft wool and cotton, symmetrical knot technique with traditional motifs, in a leather case, worth 400 euros (1,988.80 lei);
  • * wooden chest, with gilded metal appliqués and traditional textile material “Kanga” – from “East African seal with the spoken word”, Hanga collection, worth 300 euros (1491.60 lei);
  • * a set of three Herendi porcelain golf balls and a silver coin worth 260 euros (1292.72 lei);
  • * a local chair – Waura “Tamandua” (ant) and a metal coin, a commemorative souvenir of Juscelin Kubicek, the founder of Brazil, both worth 240 euros (1193.28 lei).

According to the list published by the Presidential Administration, the head of state was also offered:

  • * Masai wooden shield, handmade, made of leather, with natural fur on the edge, hand-painted in the colors of the flag of the Republic of Kenya, worth 180 euros (894.96 lei);
  • * a metal coin with the image of the headquarters of the National Assembly, the Parliament of the Republic of Cape Verde, in metal, worth 42 euros (208.82 lei);
  • * a raffia bag inscribed with the emblem of the city of Praia and a fringed scarf made of natural textile material with traditional motifs, worth 36 euros (178.99 lei);
  • * a metal statuette representing a monument of the African Renaissance in miniature, worth 180 euros (894.96 lei);
  • * the painting “La Maman Senegalaise”, made by the artist Jite, worth 65 euros (323.18 lei);
  • * traditional khaki backpack from Bavaria, made of textile material, worth 150 euros (745.80 lei);
  • * men’s leather handbag and women’s leather shoulder bag El Boyero worth 102 euros (507.14 lei);
  • * a portrait photograph of the President of Germany with an autograph worth 55 euros (273.46 lei);
  • * picture – a picture in wine made by the artist Eugene Gorean using Fetească Neagră and Răra Neagră wine, worth 230 euros (1143.56 lei);
  • * a “CANVAS” type painting called “War”, made by the artist Alina Kosenko, director of the art gallery of the city of Bucha, worth 140 euros (696.08 lei);
  • * a portrait photo of King Charles III with an autograph, in a cherry leather frame, worth 35 euros (174.98 lei);
  • * a painting made by the enamel technique of the creative workshop of Old Tbilisi, a traditional vase made in the city of Hiroshima from local materials, special sand and Japanese maple leaves, packed in a wooden box, a round metal plate with the image of the Patriarchal Cathedral. “Saint Alexander Nevsrii” in Sofia, Bulgaria, packed in a velvet box, each worth 80 euros (397.76 lei);
  • * an album with a picture of the Istana Presidential Palace, Singapore, in a velvet box, worth 30 euros (149.16 lei);
  • * a painting representing a gold-colored metal model of the city of Masdar, in a plastic frame, in a leather box, worth 75 euros (372.90 lei);
  • * a metal emblem of historical cultural heritage and a metal pine, worth 93 euros (462.40 lei);
