Meteorologists from the Meteorological Center of Southern Transylvania warn that there is a significant risk of avalanches of the third degree on a scale of one to five in the Rodna Mountains above 1,800 meters, according to the Nivometeorological Bulletin issued on Tuesday.
“The snow layer is present both on higher and lower areas and is mostly stabilized. Locally significant snowfall is expected in the next 48 hours, in some places 20-30 cm of fresh snow will fall without compaction with the current layer. The intense wind will blow away a significant part of the snow in sheltered areas and in the valleys and form wind slabs of various thicknesses at altitude. Both when overloaded and, of course, on steeper slopes, the risk of triggering small and individual medium-sized avalanches will be significant (3) at an altitude of more than 1,800 m,” Sibiu meteorologists, quoted by Agerpres, specify.
On the rest of the mountain massifs, the danger of avalanches is lower than on the Rodna Mountains of the second or first degree.
The highest snow depth measured at weather stations in the mountain area is 74 centimeters at Bâlea Lac in the Făgăraş Mountains, Sibiu County, where there is a moderate risk of second-degree avalanches.
