All-electric vehicles make up 16.8% of all registered cars, while battery hybrids make up 9.2% of cars on the road.

The share of cars with petrol engines remained stable at a third of registrations, while cars with diesel engines continued to decline, with only one in nine private cars registered in France in 2023 being diesel.

According to data from the National Association for the Development of Electric Mobility (Avere), more than 1.5 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are already on the roads in France.

American carmaker Tesla currently dominates the electric car market in France and Europe with the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV.

Next up are the small Dacia Spring and MG4, both made in China, followed by the Fiat 500e and Renault Mégane, the latter becoming the first French electric car in this ranking.

AFP reminds that at the end of 2023, the French authorities decided to strengthen the rules for providing subsidies for the purchase of electric cars, giving preference to heavier vehicles produced in Europe. As a result of the changes, Chinese-made cars such as the Dacia Spring, which is the cheapest electric car on the French market, as well as the Tesla Model 3 and MG 4, will no longer receive subsidies.

For families with modest incomes who want to have access to an electric car, the French government has launched a lease-to-buy program.

With 20,000 cars in the first year, this program is available in the first phase to those who drive more than 8,000 kilometers per year by car or live more than 15 kilometers from their place of work. Later, the program will be extended to half of the most modest households.
