In order to lift the veto on Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen area with air and sea borders, Austria has asked to strengthen the protection of the EU’s external borders to combat the wave of migrants, including by allocating additional European funding for this. , as well as Romania and Bulgaria’s acceptance of asylum seekers who arrived in Austria, especially Afghans and Syrians.

These conditions are now included in the joint declaration that Austria agreed with Bulgaria and Romania on the partial accession of the two countries to the Schengen area.

Refuting recent “misinformation”, the press service of the Bulgarian government clarified that it does not accept additional conditions for Afghan and Syrian refugees arriving in Austria, that is, it will accept only those for whom Bulgaria became the first country to enter the EU, as it is stipulated Dublin regulation.

“Bulgaria does not and cannot accept people for whom it is not responsible,” the government in Sofia said in a statement.

Instead, he confirms that he has committed to working with Austria and Romania to limit “secondary movements” of asylum seekers, also in line with European rules.
